I was born in Lima, Peru (1952) and grew up in New Jersey and New York. After graduating from high school, I studied languages at Rutgers University, New Jersey and Université de Tours, Tours, France. I received a Double Major in French and Spanish Languages and Literature with a Minor in Art History. My MA degree is from New York University in Latin American Literature. Upon completing my MA, I moved to the Near East and Europe where I worked as an ESL teacher (English as a Second Language), studied languages and travelled during two and a half years. Upon returning to New York City, I studied photography and dark room printing techniques at the International Center of Photography and was later accepted as a full-time student at Parson’s School of Design where I received a Communication Arts degree. I worked as a Graphic Designer and Creative Art Director after art school, first full-time, then independently as Liliana Zavaleta Design, working in NYC, Upstate NY and then later in Chile. I received several awards for my work: Editorial and Marketing Awards, Honorable Mentions, a Best Brochure Design Award and the Best of Show Award from the Art Director’s Club of New York. In 1992 I moved to South America with my husband and two children where I had been hired to be the Director of the Design Department at a large advertising agency in Santiago, Chile. In 1996 I left the Advertising world and began drawing and painting with teachers Paula Salas and later, Jorge Kuhn. I became a full time visual artist and have attended various art workshops both in the US and South America, a Residency at Vermont Studio Center and advanced tutorials at Taller Bloc in Santiago, Chile.
My work has been exhibited in both Chile and the US.
Currently, I divide my time between Santiago, Chile and Upstate NY.
